Ingredients with a bad reputation: the damage and harm proven ...
Is it dangerous ingredients in cosmetics, which we are afraid of beauty journalists and women's magazines? Parabens, sodium sulfate, mineral oils, silicones, talc, petrolatum ... This is exactly dangerous? And if so, why?

Parabens
Parabens are now gets a lot. If you see the name on the label the following: methylparaben (Methylparaben), Propylparaben (Propylparaben), ethylparaben (Ethylparaben), butyl paraben (Butylparaben), - it, too, all parabens. What they are admitted into the makeup? This is a very effective preservative, they kill bacteria, prevent the formation of fungus in cosmetics, because of which the skin can be affected. But not like that so recently parabens? These preservatives are produced from benzoic acid (a substance that contains many plants), and this acid causes hormonal disorders and cancer.

It sounds scary agree .  But there is good news .  Although benzoic acid is a substance with a very high estrogenic activity (which causes changes in hormone levels), but dangerous to humans it can be only in very high doses .  The concentration of parabens in cosmetics is not so high that it can cause hormonal problems .  In addition, if most plants contain a substance that agree become dangerous practically all natural plant .  But this reason no one says .  With regard to the fact that parabens provoke cancer, the scientific community is not so long ago debunked studies found a link between parabens and Oncology .  The Scientific Committee of the European Union recently issued a clarification on the use of parabens in cosmetics .  It states that "the impact that health parabens contained in cosmetics can be called insignificant" .  The Committee concluded that only about 1% parabens contained in cosmetics can penetrate into our body .  This is a negligible amount, which may not be fatal destruction .

There are only fears, whether parabens put in the cream is not as critical a lot. Since this problem is solved as follows: in the list constituting means parabens should be at the end of the list, it means that they are at low concentrations. If parabens closer to the top, it is an occasion to reflect.

And one more thing. Cream may not be entirely without preservatives. And parabens negligible effect on the body and the skin is much less dangerous than exposure to bacteria and fungus infections that may occur in the cream without any preservatives.

Sodium lauryl sulfate (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, SLS)
This component has good cleaning properties. A main claim to SLS - it irritates the skin and is the cause of hair loss and even cancer. Are they justified?

Ingredients with a bad reputation: the damage and harm proven ...
Sodium lauryl sulfate is a really irritating the skin component. This has been proved by scientists. And when they want to show how annoying is the substance being studied, they often compare performance with SLS. Products with sodium lauryl cause backlash skin, and therefore may only be present in the rinse-off products. Permitted concentration in cosmetics, which does not cause a change on the skin, - no more than 1%. Although, it is worth the risk? Who invented plenty of other cleaning components, less annoying. By the way, the other sodium sulfate, and less irritating to the skin is much softer and safer.

As for the other claims to the SLS, then there is no evidence and research about the fact that this ingredient can cause alopecia (hair loss) and cancer.

Mineral oil
Proponents of natural cosmetics believe that this ingredient must be avoided at all costs, since mineral oils are derived from petroleum. What's the danger?

In fact, the statement that mineral oils are not natural - a little dubious. After oil, from which they are obtained, it is a natural substance. In addition, mineral oils - this is not to say that you apply on your face clean oil. These are different things!

It should also be said that there are several types of petroleum products. And one which is used in cosmetics, it is safe. There is no evidence that the mineral oil cause cancer. Mineral oil can make the skin - so it's good to create a protective barrier that prevents irritation, which slows down moisture loss. And the only negative point can be called that mineral oils can trigger the appearance of acne, as several clog pores. Although this is enough to moisturize the skin and make it soft.

Silicones
Silicones are often used in cosmetics. It is, in fact, saving the ingredient that provides a means of good glide over the skin, makes the texture of cosmetics soft and silky. The labels often appear under the name silicone dimethicone and cyclomethicone. Moreover, silicones form a protective barrier to the skin, keeping it moist. But precisely because of this barrier silicones became known as comedogenic ingredient and all criticism of silicones refers to these properties.

However, silicone is not comedogenic! It really forms a protective barrier that not only blocks the penetration into the skin of some ingredients of cosmetics, but also dirt, among other things. Most people perceive silicones, and do not react on their content in cosmetics. And only some irritation - this is a possible side effect. And the rest of the silicone in cosmetics is not dangerous.

 Petrolatum
Vaseline (Petrolatum or Vaseline) has a bad name as mineral oils, mainly due to the fact that it is derived from petroleum. And the EU has banned most of the oil in cosmetics because they cause cancer.

However, most likely, this prohibition does not apply to petroleum jelly, as there is a sufficient amount of cream of European producers of petroleum jelly in the composition. As for the connection between cancer and petrolatum, I could not find any serious and scientific evidence of this. Vaseline is still a good moisturizer, and probably the most affordable moisturizer. It also reduces inflammation of the skin and often even heals.

Propylene glycol
Propylene (Propylene Glycol) is needed in cosmetics as a moisturizing component. It can draw moisture from the environment and deliver it into the skin. It also helps the skin to deliver other active ingredients contained in creams and serums. Why do we now sometimes hear about the bad reputation of this "magic" ingredient?

Opponents of propylene glycol is said to be dangerous because it causes problems with the liver, kidneys and provoke cancer. But again, it is worth considering, but is it true?

Indeed, propylene glycol - antifreeze is in fact, a product harmful to health, causing cancer. But only the antifreeze of the harmfulness of which they say - is propylene glycol in 100% concentration. In cosmetics such component is present in miniscule doses (typically less than 5%). Such concentrations are not harmful. You rest, and that propylene glycol is not contained in the list of carcinogenic substances, which is registered by the European Parliament.

Talcum
Talc (magnesium silicate or water) is a mineral used in cosmetic products to improve the appearance of products. It also has moisture absorbing properties.

In 1990, a study was published according to which the conclusion was drawn on the link between talc and ovarian cancer (although the researchers said then that the tests are not definitive, and tests will continue). In general, it appears that talc is truly be called off-studied ingredient to the internal organs, so if you have a concern, do not use tools for personal hygiene containing talc. Although you may want to be more careful when applying any cosmetic talc.
